Among the 15 Newly Industrialised Countries (NIC) analysed,  Taiwan is ranked No. 3 with regard to both the General Innovation Index (GII) and Sustainability Index (SusI). Taiwan is also specialising on sustainability technologies with regard to publications, but not in patents. Please view the methods sheet for more detailed information about the indicators and their calculation.
The world shares of Taiwan in sustainability relevant publications, patents and exports are given in table 1.

Indicators for general innovation capacity

Among the 15 Newly Industrialised Countries analysed,  Taiwan is ranked No. 2 with regard to learning and is placed in the middle with regard to openness and skilled labour, but only No. 14 with regard to governance.
Concerning the environmental and social aspects that are used for the SusI index, Tai-wan is ranked No. 7 with regard to social aspects and No. 4 with regard to environ-mental aspects.


Indicators for technology specific absorptive capacity

 Due to missing export data there is no conclusion about Taiwan's specialisation base with regard to exports possible. However, the comparison of literature and patent specialisation reveals a significant build up of the knowledge base. The world shares of Taiwan in technology specific publications (WLS), patents (WPS) and exports (WTS) are given in table 2.
